This week was our first back on the Nivernais canal and we welcomed our group of Canadian wine and bike enthusiasts. They liked to be known as 'wine drinkers with a biking problem'! It certainly wasn't the other way round. They had absolutely no problem tackling with gusto a good selection of La Luciole's wine cellar! Their oenological knowledge was certainly impressive. As for their 'biking problem', it might actually have been that the gentle cycling terrain close to the canal wasn't quite rugged enough for them, some of them being used to long distances of rugged, steep, off road scrambles.
If trips to our Chablis vigneron and perhaps the Caves de Bailly appealed, so too did our visit to Vezelay with a lunch stop there at the charming Hotel de la Poste. It was beautiful weather so we were comfortably settled outside until a sudden deluge provided a between-course refresher enough to persuade us to take our dessert indoors. This only seemed to add to the volume of the singing on the journey back to the boat! William tried to save his ears by getting out of the bus but found it a little too difficult since he was driving! But such enthusiastic song probably still didn't top the group's rendition of the Canadian National Anthem round the dinner table! Oh Canada!
Here's wishing the group a happy onward journey to the mountains of Switzerland.
