Luciole Blog

5th - 11th July

Sunflower season has well and truly arrived in Burgundy. Vast blooms, the size of dinner plates, brighten the rolling countryside. In French, the sunflower is called tournesol – "turns towards the sun". Young plants follow the sun from east to west during the day before turning back overnight, ready to greet the dawn. As they mature, they can no longer muster the energy for this daily journey and remain facing (orientated) east, towards the rising sun and the Orient itself.

The Luciole and her crew were a week without passengers. Everyone made the most of the time to recharge their batteries and carry out some maintenance and outside painting before preparations for the week ahead. After a period of hot temperatures the weather cooled – out in the fields the farmers worked tirelessly to gather in the golden crops.

During our week without passengers, we were not without visitors, however. A friendly pair of swans called by each day and seemed delighted to see the crew return towards the end of the week.
