A first on the Luciole - in the 47-year history of our company, Inland Voyages - the Māori Haka performed on board. What an honour. Thank you Neil. True to say we waited a long time to see you both, courtesy of covid – but for the Haka rendition it certainly was worth it!
Out in the countryside, the sweeping fields of golden sunflowers are now few and far between. Instead, as the flowering season draws to a close, the flowers bow their mighty ripening seedheads, creating swathes of lime-coloured rows as the first hints of Autumn draw ever closer.
The nights too, are drawing in and it was dark when we left the restaurant in Accolay for the short stroll back to the Luciole, on the barmy warm evening. The following morning as we cruised to Vincelles, Matelot Cailan found a stowaway – a tiny lizard, who was caught, studied by all and released safely back into the grass at the next lock.
It was a tearful goodbye on Saturday morning in Auxerre, when on a perfect blue sky morning the sun had risen before breakfast, casting a golden light onto the mighty Cathedral of St Etienne and the Abbey de St Germain. Auxerre really is the skyline to dream about and remember, so too of this cruise, our delightful warm-hearted passengers.
