20th - 26th May 2018
It was Walking Week this week and James had come especially to lead our diverse group of guests across hill and dale, through verse and song and most definitely to the bottom of a glass or two of fine dessert wine! Most of the party had walked with James before and knew that entertainment was in store.
We had recitals both poetic ('The Ancient Mariner' and AA Milne's 'The King's Breakfast' - an eclectic mix!) and musical (just!), courtesy of a piano at our lunch stop in Noyers, not to mention a bottomless panoplie of anecdotes and information. There was rarely a dull moment.
We were an intrepid group this week who didn't let a small matter of a closed chateau get in the way of exploring the grounds. The not-locked gate just 'fell open' which clearly meant as a sign to investigate until the groundsman came to explain to the contrary!
We were lucky enough to have the sun with us for most of the week but its decision to disappear in favour of rain over Chablis didn't stop Mariana and Penny marching through the Grand Cru vineyards to meet us. However it was neither sun nor rain that was the element of note this week. It was snow, in the guide of Jack's cheese presentation at dinner! There were a certain few quite transported by his evocation of light-as-snow Chaource. Chaource can sponsor him later!
